Qualifying Work Experience

To qualify as a solicitor through the SQE, you must complete at least two years' full-time (or equivalent) Qualifying Work Experience (QWE). This must give you the opportunity to develop some of the competencies needed to practise as a solicitor.

How to complete QWE

You have flexibility in how and where you gain QWE. It can include a wide range of legal work, such as:

  • a traditional training contract
  • a placement during your law degree
  • pro bono work in a legal advice centre
  • work as a paralegal
  • relevant experience from a previous role

You can complete QWE in one continuous block or in stages, across up to four different organisations. For example, six months of pro bono work plus 18 months at a law firm would meet the two-year requirement when combined.

When to undertake QWE

There are no rules about when you must complete your QWE. You can do it before, during or after your SQE assessments.

However, your QWE must:

  • be registered with the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA)
  • be completed before you apply for admission as a solicitor
  • be signed off by a solicitor or Compliance Officer for Legal Practice (COLP) with direct knowledge of your work (this person does not need to hold a practising certificate).
