The SRA hosted a summit in October 2024 to discuss the University of Exeter’s research into differential outcomes in legal professional assessments. An output of the summit was the development of an action plan involving a variety of stakeholders. One of the actions focused on what can be done to help candidates prepare more effectively for the SQE assessments.
The Kaplan Assessments team took a number of key actions in 2025 and early 2026, including:
1. Running a series of question writing workshops for organisations involved in producing candidate preparation materials for SQE1
2. Running a series of marking workshops for organisations involved in training candidates for SQE2
3. Creating a candidate preparation page, providing quick answers and links to further information to help candidates prepare for their assessments.
We are now preparing to run a second question writing workshop for organisations involved in producing SQE1 practice or example Single Best Answer MCQs (SBAs).
This workshop is for organisations such as training providers, universities, and any other organisations that produce SQE1 practice or example SBAs. If the workshop is oversubscribed, we may need to limit attendance to one or two people per organisation.
In the week commencing 6 July 2026. It will be held online.
The workshop will be an interactive session to review and discuss example SBAs. The workshop will be led by the Kaplan Assessments academic team responsible for writing SQE1 assessment questions, using the same principles and process as for SQE1 assessment questions.
Complete the expression of interest form by no later than 4pm on Friday 5 June 2026.
Yes. Once the applications have been received, further information will be provided about the workshop, including the preparation required, the date and time of the workshop and an agenda.
There is a dedicated SBA page on the SQE website, including a video on how to write effective SBAs. This video was produced following the most recent series of workshops, summarising the key points from those workshops.
Further information will be provided about the workshop once applications have been received. If you have any initial queries, please contact enquiries@sqe.sra.org.uk.
