Kaplan will be carrying out the annual review of the functioning legal knowledge (the FLK) for SQE1 and SQE2

Jan 31, 2024

The FLK for the SQE is contained in the in the Assessment Specifications as follows:

  • SQE1 (FLK1 and FLK2)
  • SQE2 FLK

The aims of the annual review are to:

  • Update the FLK to reflect changes in the law and practice and make any other essential changes.
  • Offer clarification in the light of feedback from stakeholders where necessary.

All stakeholders are welcome to submit any feedback relating to the FLK and in line with the aims of the review. Please email us - enquiries@sqe.sra.org.uk - with the subject header ‘SQE FLK Review’ by 5pm on 28 February 2024 with your feedback. Please state clearly which FLK your suggestion relates to (i.e. SQE1 FLK1, SQE1 FLK2 or SQE2 FLK) and what your feedback is. This will be reviewed by the subject matter experts at Kaplan. A decision will then be taken, in conjunction with the SRA, as to whether the FLK will be amended as a result of the feedback.

An updated FLK will be published by the end of April and we will also let stakeholders know of any key changes to the FLK on this website. Save for any change required to reflect the recent change to EU law (see below), the updated FLK will apply to any SQE assessments that take place after 1 September 2024.

Please note that we are aware that certain sections of the Retained EU Law (Revocation and Reform) Act 2023 have recently come into force and impact parts of FLK1. This will be reflected in changes to the FLK, where relevant, which will be made shortly and which will apply to the July 2024 SQE1 assessment. More information can be found here. The cut off date for the law upon which candidates are examined in the SQE is set out in the SQE1 and SQE2 Assessment Specifications (links below).
